Participants will explore how ventilation improves gas exchange and oxygenation in patients with respiratory compromise.

In this section, learners will assess the criteria for providing ventilation in home settings.

The focus will be on patient selection and indications for long-term respiratory support.

The connection between sleep patterns and respiratory function will be examined, particularly regarding sleep-disordered breathing.

Participants will assess the implications of nocturnal ventilation and identify effective management strategies for patients in the community.

This module covers a wide range of ventilation techniques considering the differences between non-invasive and invasive ventilation.

For example invasive methods like endotracheal intubation, and non-invasive options such as CPAP and BiPAP.

Clinical scenarios will be discussed to illustrate when to apply each technique and the associated risks and benefits.

Here participants will gain in-depth knowledge of various ventilation modes, including CPAP and BiPAP, and their physiological effects on ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) matching.

The module will also address the necessary settings adjustments, patient monitoring requirements, and clinical indications for use in community care.

Participants will learn essential protocols for the care of people using ventilated in the community, focusing on performing safety checks that include assessing ventilator settings, verifying the patency of the airway, and monitoring for signs of respiratory distress.

This module will familiarise participants with commonly used ventilators in community care, such as the Trilogy and Nippy models.

Learners will gain hands-on experience with the ventilators, enhancing their competency and equipment troubleshooting.

Learners will develop the necessary skills to interpret and respond to a range of ventilator alarms, including low tidal volume, high-pressure alarms, and apnoea alarms.

The module will emphasize the importance of understanding alarm parameters and the immediate steps to take to ensure client safety and effective ventilation.

This demonstration covers the setup of heated humidification, including its connection to a ventilator.

It focuses on ensuring optimal humidification and minimising complications during ventilation.

For external sessions, participants can engage in a hands-on practical component.

Learn how coughing works and why the cough reflex is so important for clearing airway secretions. An effective cough can prevent serious complications like aspiration pneumonia, especially for people with respiratory needs.

Cough assist devices, or insufflation-exsufflation devices, are life-changing for individuals with neuromuscular conditions or other issues that make coughing difficult. These devices help maintain clear airways and improve respiratory health.

We’ll highlight the importance of maintaining airway patency and how assisted coughing improves outcomes for clients in the community.

You’ll also learn about situations where cough assist devices shouldn’t be used, like after recent thoracic surgery or for individuals with certain cardiovascular conditions. This ensures care is always safe and appropriate.

Finally, we’ll cover the risks of improper use, the importance of watching for adverse reactions, and how to respond confidently.
