Our Story

Superior Healthcare was founded in 2006 by Stewart Thorp, his father Charles and Sarah Richards in response to caring for Stewart’s brother, Alex, who has an acquired brain injury. In their own words, this is the story of Stewart, Charles and Alex.

Founding Superior Healthcare

At 11 years old, my brother Alex was knocked from his bike whilst cycling in 2001 by a driver who had been using his mobile phone.

Alex suffered a catastrophic blow to his head and was rushed to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at King’s College Hospital, London. He spent four weeks on life support, during this time he relied on a tracheostomy and a ventilator for breathing support.

Finding Alex a care package

When Alex was ready to return home and continue his rehabilitation, we struggled to find a specialist provider that could fit into our family life and deliver the high-quality care and rehabilitation support Alex needed.

Finally, myself and my father, Charles, connected with Sarah Richards, a Registered Nurse. Sarah was assigned to recruit the team of support workers, healthcare assistants, and registered nurses to provide at-home care for Alex.

It can be really challenging frankly to have a care team in your family home. I recognised at an early stage it was a two-way street; that if we wanted a team of high-quality and experienced care professionals, that we all liked and really got on with, I had to provide a fantastic working environment.

Over the subsequent years, myself, Charles, and Sarah collaborated with a team of healthcare professionals, solicitors, and case managers to facilitate Alex’s ongoing rehabilitation. This included his return to education and participation in Headway, an independent charity focused on social rehabilitation for adults with acquired brain injuries.

Founding Superior Healthcare

The challenges we faced during Alex’s rehabilitation highlighted the need for a specialist complex care provider that successfully could fit into family life.

A provider that could bridge the gap between local homecare agencies, who lacked the clinical skills, and the national organisations who were missing the personal touch.

This realisation led to our founding of Superior Healthcare in 2006. Our mission being to provide specialist nurse-led care services for individuals with complex and long-term health needs.

Clinical excellence, with a personal touch

Since then, we have been dedicated to working with children, young people, adults, and their families. We are used to working with families, like ours, who have had to make significant adjustments to their home and lifestyle following a life-changing incident or diagnosis.

Our support spans day or night care, student support, or live-in care, our nurse-led team provides tailored twenty-four-hour care, respite care, and dignified care for those approaching the end of their lives.

Proudly, we strive to achieve successful rehabilitation outcomes where possible for clients following a life-altering incident, just like Alex. We take pride knowing that the quality of our service has led to a reduction of care required by our clients, for example when we can complete an independent living trial for a client who has a brain injury and successfully reduce the amount of professional support required.

At our core, Superior Healthcare is a family-run service, committed to providing high-quality care driven by personal experience, clinical excellence and compassion.
