This half-day Diabetes Awareness Training is designed for registered nurses, support workers, and healthcare assistants. It is ideal for those with limited experience in diabetes care or those looking to refresh their clinical skills and knowledge in line with current best practice standards.
The course will strengthen your ability to identify the signs of a diabetic emergency and equip you with the skills to respond, manage and prevent emergencies.
You will gain hands-on experience through simulated practice sessions. These sessions replicate real-life scenarios you may encounter in the community, ensuring you are well-prepared to handle diabetic emergencies correctly and confidently.
Our training equips care professionals with the skills to provide safe and effective care for people living with diabetes. The course covers the essentials of diabetes management, blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration, and recognising signs of high or low blood sugar.
You will also learn how to support clients with diabetes who may be living with other complex conditions, for example, dementia or brain injuries. Our approach combines theoretical learning with hands-on practice, ensuring you gain the confidence and expertise to deliver high-quality care.
Course Overview:
Our clinical educators begin sessions with a thorough overview of diabetes fundamentals, covering the differences between Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes.
Participants will develop a solid understanding of the causes, risk factors, and the effects of diabetes on the body.

This module will help you to detect diabetes early and respond appropriately.
Master the techniques of blood glucose monitoring, including the correct use of glucometers, interpreting blood sugar levels, and understanding target ranges.
This ensures accurate monitoring and effective diabetes management.
Gain hands-on experience in administering insulin safely, including the different types of insulin, correct injection techniques, and understanding the importance of timing and dosage adjustments based on blood glucose levels.
Explore various treatment options for diabetes; from lifestyle changes and dietary management to oral medications and injectable therapies.
Learn how to tailor treatment plans to meet the individual needs of each child, young person, or adult.
Understand the range of diabetes medications available, including how they work, potential side effects, and when they are prescribed. This knowledge enables you to manage medication effectively, correctly and confidently.
Learn specialist strategies for managing diabetes in vulnerable populations, such as older adults or people with learning disabilities.
This module covers the complexities of care for people with complex care conditions like dementia, brain injuries or spinal injuries for example.
Understand the importance of regular health checks and foot care in diabetes management.
Learn to recognise signs of diabetic foot complications and how to prevent them through proper care and monitoring.
Identify and manage high-risk conditions associated with diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and neuropathy.
This module ensures you can provide high-quality care to minimise these risks.
Distinguish between hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar).
Learn the causes, symptoms, and immediate actions required to manage these conditions effectively and confidently.
Deepen your understanding of diabetes management, focusing on both the long-term strategies and day-to-day practices that help clients maintain stable blood sugar levels, prevent complications and live well.
Learn how to care for diabetic clients when they are unwell, including how illness can affect blood sugar levels and what adjustments may be necessary in their care plan to ensure their safety.
Prepare for emergency situations such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or severe hypoglycaemia.
This module covers the immediate actions needed, including when to escalate care, ensuring you are ready to act promptly and confidently.

Our course is CPD-accredited and can be used towards nurse revalidation requirements.
All our complex care team members undergo diabetes training when they join and receive annual refresher courses to keep their skills up-to-date.
We conduct training in Kent, Essex, Hampshire, East Sussex, and West Sussex.
Each location accommodates up to 10-12 delegates. For larger groups, we offer flexible options, such as providing multiple trainers on the same day or scheduling additional training days.
We also offer on-site training at healthcare providers’ premises. If your facility has a suitable training space, we can bring our expertise directly to you.
