Paul is regaining independence after a spinal injury. He has a care package that is focused on providing Paul and his wife, Sarah, with the flexibility and support needed to continue his rehabilitation.
Three years ago, Paul experienced a life-altering accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury at the C4/C5 level. The injury left him paralysed from the neck down, with no movement for the first three months. His journey of recovery began at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he started intensive rehabilitation — a process he continues today.
Throughout the past three years, Paul has been supported by a dedicated team of carers from Superior Healthcare. Their consistent presence and understanding of Paul’s needs have played a central role in his rehabilitation. They have not only provided expert care, but also encouragement and practical support, enabling Paul to achieve goals he once thought impossible.
“My first goal was to stand, which I can now do with the help of either a carer, parallel bars, or a gutter frame. The next was to walk — and now I can walk with a gutter frame,” says Paul. “I’ve even got a bet with the barmaid at my local pub that if I walk to the bar, she’ll buy me a beer. That’s my next aim!”
The flexibility and commitment of Paul’s care team have been pivotal. Superior Healthcare has worked closely with Paul and his family, always keeping his rehabilitation goals front of mind. Whether it’s care planning, adjusting routines to suit his recovery, or offering out-of-hours support, Paul has felt fully supported.
“It’s not just the carers — the whole team from the CEO down are approachable,” Paul adds. “We’ve built up a great rapport. Even when I’ve needed help outside of hours, someone’s been there. Nothing’s too much bother.”
Paul’s wife, Sarah, has also been a vital part of his journey. With the confidence that Paul is in safe hands, she’s been able to balance work, family life, and a major personal challenge — running the London Marathon.
“I’m running for Spinal Research because seeing what Paul has achieved every day inspires me,” says Sarah. “He went from being completely paralysed to walking with a gutter frame. It’s hard to complain about sore legs when I think of what Paul has overcome.”
Thanks to the right care, Paul’s determination, and the unwavering support of his family, progress has been possible. From the early days of total paralysis to standing, walking, and now looking forward to walking to his local pub, Paul’s story is a powerful example of what’s achievable with the right support.
Sarah is raising funds for Spinal Research to help others benefit from continued innovation in spinal injury recovery. You can follow her journey and support the cause here.
