Lidia’s Story: From Teacher to Carer

New to Care

Join us as we delve into Lidia’s incredible journey, from leaving a demanding school environment to discovering her true passion as a Carer and Support Worker. At Superior Healthcare, our New to Care program empowers individuals like Lidia to make a seamless transition and create a positive impact in the lives of those they care for.

Can you tell us about your previous work experience before joining Superior Healthcare?

I was working in the behavioural unit within a Kent Foundation Special School. It was very stressful. I handed in my notice without having a job to go to.

What made you decide to apply for the Support Worker role at Superior Healthcare?

I didn’t have any care experience, but I saw Superior Healthcare advertising for an Agency Support Worker role and just applied. I thought, “I’ll see what happens.” Then I met Juliette and signed up for the New to Care training.

How was your experience with the New to Care training?

The training was great. I had never received training like this in schools. When you work in a school, you receive continuous different training, inset days, training days, but this training was really in-depth. There were lots of discussions, and it was very informative. Plus, being actively involved in the training makes you think about what to do and how to do it.

I was really pleased with the training. Peter covered every aspect of what I’m doing now. When I go to work, I never feel like, “Oh, I don’t know what to do because we haven’t covered it,” because he covered everything.

When did you join Superior Healthcare, and what division do you work in?

I joined in April this year. I work in the agency division. In the beginning, I started working in lots of different places so that I would have a chance to see what I like and what I didn’t like. But now, I feel settled. I have my favourite places where I usually get shifts. Sometimes I’ll sign up for the odd shift somewhere else, but rarely.

How do you feel about your current work-life balance?

I feel settled. I’m happy and content with my life because I have control over my life. I can work the days and times I want. I don’t feel like a robot. I don’t have a preferred day to work. I work when I want.

Before, I was working strict hours in the school with no time off during school term time. Then, when half-term came, I would have all that time off, and I would think, “What do I do with this time?” So, it was kind of depressing.

But now, I can have one day or two days off whenever I want.

How do you perceive the working environment at Superior Healthcare compared to your previous experiences?

I’ve said to a few people, “Oh, I’m working for Superior Healthcare now,” and they’ll say that they’ve been here (Superior Healthcare), and I say, “Yes, it’s a really nice company to work for.” You don’t expect a workplace to be so nice.

Previously, in the school, there were deadlines, deadlines, people stressing, and all sorts of things. The kids pick up on this intuitively, then they get stressed, and it’s a vicious circle.

But here, for example, when I go to the Residential Home in Broadstairs, I know what I need to do, and I just do it. I tick it off, and then that’s it. I’m happy, I go home, and relax. I can say, I go to sleep without feeling stressed.

We are all so pleased for Lidia after finding genuine happiness and fulfilment in her role as a Carer after leaving the classroom. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
