Tracheostomy Training Courses for Nurses

 

Superior Healthcare is offering two types of accredited courses for nurses who are looking to improve their knowledge and clinical skills in caring for clients with complex conditions. Both courses are CPD accredited.

Course 1 – Tracheostomy Awareness

This course is designed for nurses working in hospitals or the community who are looking to improve their clinical skills in complex care. Learn about caring for clients with a tracheostomy, and gain practical experience with hands-on simulated practice sessions.

Course Overview

3 hours – Tracheostomy Awareness (Adults and Paediatric) using guidelines from the National Tracheostomy Safety Project.

  • Types and characteristics of tracheostomies; neonatal/paediatric, cuffed, uncuffed, fenestrated/unfenestrated, tracheostomies with inner cannulas
  • Indications for tracheostomy
  • Caring for a client with a tracheostomy including:
    • Suction
    • Tracheostomy tape/tie change
    • Understanding the rationale for humidification and nebulisation
    • Routine tracheostomy tube change
    • Emergency tracheostomy management including guidance on the management of blocked or displaced tubes
  • Simulated practice stations including suction, tape/tie changes, tracheostomy tube change, and emergency tracheostomy tube change.

Course 2 – Tracheostomy Update

This course is designed for nurses who are experienced in complex care but are looking to further develop their clinical skills. Learn about best practices for clients with a tracheostomy, and gain practical experience with hands-on simulated practice sessions.

Overview

3 hours -Tracheostomy update including (Adult and Paediatrics) using guidelines from the National Tracheostomy Safety Project.

  • Overview and best practices for caring for a client with a tracheostomy including:
    • Review of indications for suction and safe suction technique
    • Review of tracheostomy tape/tie change
    • Review of humidification and nebulization
    • Review of a routine tracheostomy tube change
    • Emergency tracheostomy management including guidance on the management of blocked or displaced tubes
    • Review of ventilation including modes and troubleshooting ventilator alarms.
  • Simulated practice stations including suction, tape/tie changes, tracheostomy tube change, emergency tracheostomy tube change, and setting up ventilation wet and dry circuit.
